Letter From The President

Welcome to the newly designed Pottsboro Chamber of Commerce Website. It is a wealth of information about the Pottsboro community and all that this area has to offer. Whether you are just passing through, on vacation or considering moving to this beautiful part of the world, you will discover on these pages what makes Pottsboro and the Lake Texoma region unique and special.

James A. Potts settled in this area in 1878. He was a pioneer who donated land for a town and a right-of-way so that the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad could extend from Denison to this area. The town became a thriving business center and was incorporated in 1880.

This area has transitioned through the years from a railroad town to an agriculture community to a bedroom community for businesses in Sherman and Denison. Today it is one of the leading tourist areas in Texas. In 1944, the U. S.

Army Corp of Engineers began building the Denison Dam which would ultimately create Lake Texoma. The dam was created primarily to provide hydroelectric power for North Texas and Southern Oklahoma. But the 89,000 surface acres of the lake soon became a major tourist and fishing attraction.

After maintaining week-end homes for years, many choose to make Pottsboro their permanent home. The Pottsboro Independent School District is known as one of the best public school systems in the State. Check out our local businesses and you will find genuinely friendly people who are anxious to serve you. From restaurants to churches to marinas and tackle shops, you have everything at your fingertips right here in Pottsboro.

Take time to thumb through this website and you will get a taste of what Pottsboro has to offer. I assure you, you won’t be disappointed. We encourage you to come play or come stay. Either way, you will be glad you did.
